“Titagya” Means “We Have Changed”… And We Are Changing Lives One Student at a Time

Titagya Schools is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that promotes early educational opportunities in northern Ghana by building and operating schools, partnering with public primary schools to enhance their effectiveness, and administering a scholarship program.  We are currently operating a pre-school and kindergarten for 120 students in the village of Dalun, Ghana.

Our programs cater to children in rural parts of northern Ghana, a region which faces a tremendous lack of early educational possibilities.  The average income in northern Ghana, the economically poorest part of Ghana, is less than $1 per day and the rural literacy rate is 22%.  An important contributing factor to the region’s challenges is the dearth of early education; an increase in high-quality early education would have the power to give children the valuable language, social, and other skills, as well as the self-confidence, they need to succeed in later grades. The lack of early education also harms the academic prospects of older girls, because they are culturally required to stay home to watch their younger siblings, rather than attend school.  Further, the schools that do exist in northern Ghana often suffer from an over-reliance on rote memorization-based teaching and inadequate teacher management policies.

To address these challenges in Dalun, our school offers the most interactive early education in northern Ghana.  We utilize vocabulary-building games and experiential exercises that have proven to be highly successful elsewhere in developing children’s abilities and confidence, and we partner with local schools to implement aspects of our program in their classrooms.  The partnership element of our model will enable us to exponentially increase our impact by effecting positive change in the public schools where the vast majority of students learn.  We strive to provide high-quality education at a relatively low cost and are committed to the principles of transparency and local stakeholdership.  We plan to expand our activities to reach children in all of northern Ghana’s 32 rural school districts.
